Now I don’t have to feel so bad if I spend the weekend loafing around. And sure, that’s what this study implies: We need to get more comfortable getting lost in our thoughts without having to multitask while doing so. But, it also cautions us to not get too content being a sloth, because like anything without moderation, it can become a bad habit—and detrimental to our health. So, this week, don’t feel guilty if you’re not waking up at 5 AM and running10 miles like the pros do. You’re maybe better off spending those extra couple of hours in bed thinking about your day, or planning out your schedule, or revisiting your monthly goals. However, also be mindful of how often you sit around, and if some of that free time not spent pondering your thoughts could be used for getting some chores done, hitting the gym, or meeting up with friends. Albert Einstein is widely regarded as a genius, but how did he get that way? Many researchers have assumed that it took a very special brain to come up with the theory of relativity and other stunning insights that form the foundation of modern physics. A study of 14 newly discovered photographs of Einstein's brain, which was preserved for study after his death, concludes that the brain was indeed highly unusual in many ways. But researchers still don't know exactly how the brain's extra folds and convolutions translated into Einstein's amazing abilities.
The story of Einstein's brain is a long saga that began in 1955 when the Nobel Prize-winning physicist died in Princeton, New Jersey, at age 76. His son Hans Albert and executor Otto Nathan gave the examining pathologist, Thomas Harvey, permission to preserve the brain for scientific study. Harvey photographed the brain and then cut it into 240 blocks, which were embedded in a resinlike substance. He cut the blocks into as many as 2000 thin sections for microscopic study, and in subsequent years distributed microscopic slides and photographs of the brain to at least 18 researchers around the world. With the exception of the slides that Harvey kept for himself, no one is sure where the specimens are now, and many of them have probably been lost as researchers retired or died.
Over the decades, only six peer-reviewed publications resulted from these widely scattered materials. Some of these studies did find interesting features in Einstein's brain, including a greater density of neurons in some parts of the brain and a higher than usual ratio of glia (cells that help neurons transmit nerve impulses) to neurons. Two studies of the brain's gross anatomy, including one published in 2009 by anthropologist Dean Falk of Florida State University in Tallahassee, found that Einstein's parietal lobes—possibly linked to his remarkable ability to conceptualize physics problems—had a very unusual pattern of grooves and ridges.
But the Falk study was based on only a handful of photographs that had been previously made available by Harvey, who died in 2007. In 2010, Harvey's heirs agreed to transfer all of his materials to the U.S. Army's National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) in Silver Spring, Maryland. For the new study, published today in the journal Brain, Falk teamed up with neurologist Frederick Lepore of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, in New Jersey, and Adrianne Noe, director of NMHM, to analyze 14 photographs of the whole brain from the Harvey collection that have never before been made public. The paper also includes a "roadmap" prepared by Harvey which links the photographs of the brain to the 240 blocks and the microscopic slides prepared from them, in hopes that other scientists will use them to do follow-up research.
The team compared Einstein's brain with those of 85 other humans already described in the scientific literature and found that the great physicist did indeed have something special between his ears. Although the brain, weighing 1230 grams, is only average in size, several regions feature additional convolutions and folds rarely seen in other subjects. For example, the regions on the left side of the brain that facilitate sensory inputs into, and motor control of, the face and tongue are much larger than normal; and his prefrontal cortex—linked to planning, focused attention, and perseverance in the face of challenges—is also greatly expanded.
"In each lobe," including the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes, "there are regions that are exceptionally complicated in their convolutions," Falk says. As for the enlarged regions linked to the face and tongue, Falk thinks that this might relate to Einstein's famous quote that his thinking was often "muscular" rather than in words. Although this comment is usually interpreted as a metaphor for his subjective experiences as he thought about the universe, "it may be that he used his motor cortex in extraordinary ways" connected to abstract conceptualization, Falk says. Albert Galaburda, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, says that "what's great about this paper is that it puts down … the entire anatomy of Einstein's brain in great detail." Nevertheless, Galaburda adds, the study raises "very important questions for which we don't have an answer." Among them are whether Einstein started off with a special brain that predisposed him to be a great physicist, or whether doing great physics caused certain parts of his brain to expand. Einstein's genius, Galaburda says, was probably due to "some combination of a special brain and the environment he lived in." And he suggests that researchers now attempt to compare Einstein's brain with that of other talented physicists to see if the brain's features were unique to Einstein himself or are also seen in other scientists.
Falk agrees that both nature and nurture were probably involved, pointing out that Einstein's parents were "very nurturing" and encouraged him to be independent and creative, not only in science but also in music, paying for piano and violin lessons. (Falk's 2009 study found that a brain region linked to musical talent was highly developed in Einstein's brain.)
"Einstein programmed his own brain," Falk says, adding that when the field of physics was ripe for new insights, "he had the right brain in the right place at the right time."

While I don’t know him, clearly, Elon Musk is an extreme case here as well. My co-founder of my first company worked with him when he was an intern in a supercapacitor start-up. She said everyone thought he was kind of crazy and bit rough back then … but he was already seeing things years ahead of where they were. As an intern.
The very smartest of us can see the present incredibly well. They can answer every objection, have thought through anything about their business you could every think about. The very smartest are never stumped. (And even when they are stumped, they know they are because they’ve already thought about it and known they don’t know the answer.)
But … the super smartest go further. They can actually see the future in a way we can’t. Somehow.
These are the founders I try to invest in. The ones that can see the future. For real. Much better than I ever could.
This is why I think investing really is kind of easy. Combine someone like that, with a smidge of traction. Never ever bet against them in that case.
Everyone’s out of school and so this post is not strictly about game theory but rather a case study in strategic thinking.
For 7 years I was called very few names online. Then one day my math video Multiply Numbers By Drawing Lines went viral and got over 1 million views. Suddenly people were talking about me on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. I was not a nobody; I was called a “math genius.”
I am, in fact, not a math genius. I am good at math and I’m a good student. No one ever called me a math genius because I studied math. What I learned from the experience is how to earn the public title of “math genius.”
And I want to share what I’ve learned because the world needs more math geniuses. You too can become a mathematical genius overnight. And you don’t have to be that good at math either.
So what’s the magic formula? Let me cut right to the chase.
The secret ingredient to being called a math genius depends on one factor: publicity.
If you can demonstrate an unexpected mathematical skill to a large audience, people will suddenly call you a math genius.
Is it really that simple? I decided to check out the evidence. I went over the last 10 years of US news headlines, from the Google news archive, for the phrase “math genius.” There actually weren’t too many examples. A few of them applied to recognized mathematicians, who actually are math geniuses.
But the rest of the examples were similar. The phrase “math genius” was applied to a combination of an unexpected math skill that was revealed to a large audience.
I’ve selected three stories to illustrate the point. You can learn from these examples, and you too can become a math genius in the media’s eye.
1. Ryan Fitzpatrick’s Son: Mental Math
On November 30, 2014, the Houston Texans won a game. The quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 6 touchdown passes and everyone wanted to hear his press conference. The Harvard graduate took the moment to deflect praise and instead be a proud father.
Fitzpatrick brought his 6 year old son Brady on stage. Then, he asked a reporter for two numbers in the 90s. Watch him do the math and earn the title of “math genius.”

Notice that math knowledge itself is not a path to becoming a math genius, it was demonstrating the skill to an audience.
The easiest way to becoming a math genius is to do some mental math tricks. You’ll be a hit at parties and when you get a press conference you can stun people by doing math in your head.

2. John Urschel, NFL Player: Math Researcher
Can you name an Offensive Lineman on the Baltimore Ravens? Before this year only diehard fans knew about John Urschel. Now he’s known as a “math genius.”
Urschel majored in math in college, helps teach math to grade school children, and he reads math in his spare time.
But that alone was not enough to make him a math genius in the public eye. The catalyst was he took a stance on a controversial topic. This year a few NFL players retired citing health concerns, including 24 year old Chris Borland from the San Francisco 49ers.
Urschel wrote a piece in the Players Tribune about why he plays football in spite of the risk of concussions. This suddenly raised huge attention and everyone learned he has published math papers.
The lesson is that even being in the NFL may not be enough publicity. Urschel only became a “math genius” when he also took a stance that got attention.
3. Chris McKinlay: Math For Love
It’s really hard to become a tenured math professor. You have to study math at the university level and get good grades. Then you have to get accepted into a PhD program, at which point you have to pass a preliminary exam, which perhaps 1/3 of the students do not pass. Your reward is the privilege of writing a thesis with original research, which, if accepted, earns you a PhD.
You’ve got your PhD, but now the fun really begins! You now begin postdoctoral work, where you compete for the limited number of tenured professor positions.
You could argue anyone that is a postdoc in math is knowledgeable to pass the bar of being a “math genius.” But to earn the title in the media, you have to do something else.
Chris McKinlay used his math and programming skills for dating. Specifically, he was frustrated at the results from the online dating website OKCupid. So he programmed an algorithm to improve his odds of finding a good match.
The story was covered in Wired–note that he’s called a math genius! The story is actually a bit strange when you read about the details of how he harvested the data.
No matter, applying math to love and the popular dating website OKCupid–which is a larger platform–earned him the title of “math genius.”
Conclusion
There is a hard way to becoming a math genius: actually study math and win a Fields Medal, a MacArthur “genius” grant, or get bestowed the new Genius grant. That takes extreme dedication and is why “math genius” is applied to people like Manjul Bhargava, Maryam Mirzakhani, or Terence Tao.
But why do that when you can try to get rich genius quickly?
If you’re above average at math, then figure out how to get on a bigger stage. Play a sport. Learn video editing. Get into politics. Become an actor.
The above examples illustrate the key to being a “math genius” is to show an unexpected math skill on a large stage. No matter what math skills these people possessed before, it was only after they demonstrated an unexpected application on a large stage that they got called a “math genius.”
There are a couple of unusual cases worth noting. One is Jason Padgett, a “woman chaser” who turned into a math genius after being beat up in a bar fight. I have not yet read his book, but it seems his brain injury gave him savant abilities.
Another case is a 10 year old girl Esther Okade. The British-Nigerian is starting university study and evidently, has strong math ability at a young age.
The game theorist can surmise the path to being a math genius is not about learning math. It’s about showing off your math skills so your intelligence is common knowledge. In other words, the real genius is the marketing of genius.
I took a Rorschach test w/ a psychologist and the test showed that I’m very intelligent.I also did the IQ test on the site IQtest.dk and took the 135 score.But I have difficulty to learning a lot of things and I easily forget what I read. So I'm wary of having habits that are limiting my potential.
